looking carefully

I was at a baby shower the other day, and got to hold a friend's baby while the honoree opened her gifts. He was a bright little thing, cute and alert. He was only a couple of months old; couldn't stand yet, but definitely wanted to sit up. So I sat him on my lap facing the other people, so he could see things and be amused. Another one of our friends was sitting across from me. Her nails were fuchsia and she had a lot of glittery jewelry on. This fascinated the baby. He stared and stared. I was curious too; what was fifteen (or more) minutes worth of interesting about her nails and bangles... to a baby? Then the light bulb came on; I looked down at the tot's hands. Sure enough, his ring fingers were significantly longer than his index fingers. No wonder he couldn't take his eyes off her baubles! I checked his little eyes and they matched too. Hopefully, kids these days will have it easier than previous generations did. BTW, I can't wait to see him grow up and be fabulous...!
