gee, i guess it's better without youi have a hewlett packard hp deskjet 1120c. it worked fine under all my O/S's up until i upgraded the last server box to xp. then the driver decided it had amnesia. i went to reinstall the driver from the cd. no dice; it threw error after error about unrecognizable dll's. i checked the hp support site, no updated driver. called hp support, was sent a cd with the alleged updated driver, turns out it was the same cd that had come with the original box. called back and was told that no updated driver under windows xp ever did exist. they promised me a refund of my $10.61 which has yet to materialize. anyway, so in desperation, i look in the list of windows drivers - lo and behold, it's there. i try to install the driver manually from the list. again, no dice. in one last desperate burst of effort, i remove the printer driver for the umpteenth time, and unplug the printer from the computer. i reboot without the printer attached. i manually install the printer without its being present. then i shut the computer down, reattach the printer, and power up again. miracle of miracles, it now recognizes the printer and within a couple of minutes, all the other boxes on the network see it too. we can all print once again and life is good. the one truly irritating thing was plugging in my old epson lq-500 printer to the server box to see if it would still work. of course it did. it was recognized right away under window's plug-and-pray feature, installed like a champ and worked just dandy. now how come an inexpensive 15 year old 9 pin line printer will do that and a best-in-class, everything but the kitchen sink printer gave me nothing but heartburn? i also guess hardware programming and O/S's ain't what they used to be... |
